Cathy H , TN Patient

Her Personal Story

I was diagnosed last year, 52 yr old female, (my great grandmother had TN and lived to 88 yrs.courtesy of Hennessy for pain control,) I was diagnosed after having all my molars crowned, because my dentist told me that the old fillings could be causing my pain, and in the meantime to rub vitamin E oil on my gums for the pain, no pain meds, this went on for over a year, he(the dentist, along with his wife) also told me that it was caused by menopause...

Finally got diagnosis from another dentist, told me TN, I asked if that was like Tic D.(and I knew that was what granny had) and she said same, by that time I was sent to neurologist, put on Tegretol, Lyrica, and Fentanyl because the lightening bolts in my face wouldn't stop, after a few months went for accupunture and laser, which really helped, had remission, and it started again, our friend (a retired M.D.) told us about the Lidocaine 4% nasal spray used for Severe Cluster Headaches and suggested I give it a try, told my Neurologist, he said why not, wrote the RX, and I haven't had to use any pain meds (Vicodin, Oxy.), I squirt in my mouth, swish on hurt side, spit it out, don't swallow, it will numb throat, and I can eat, brush teeth, put on makeup... and sleep at night, although I usually have to get up once or twice a night to reapply, but it works, my Neuro was thrilled, me too, I can drive (because no pain pills), etc.

I know when the lightening bolts come back I will have to go on the narcotics, but this handles the daily throbbing, toothachy, tongue firey pain, even earache.
