MVD (Microvascular Decompression) Surgery info

The operation is performed under general anesthesia where a small opening is made in the back of the skull on the side with the pain. The trigeminal nerve is viewed with a microscope and compressing blood vessels are removed and the nerve is padded with a soft pad (typically shredded Teflon).

Because the MVD, which was developed by Dr. Peter Jannetta, TNA's founding Medical Advisory Board chair, is "brain surgery," you may be reluctant to have your child undergo this treatment.  How large will the scar be?  How much hair is shaved?

To help better understand the realities of this surgery, please see the pictorial "essay" below, courtesy of Shianna's family.
